<font=-1>(sorry I am no able to quote with this browser, so quoting just loosely)
...no sense transmitting to a nonpowered device...
- au contraire, makes no sense checking, if device is or is not powered, when transmitting to it. The very example is the posting starting this thread.

...without opening the box...
you need at least to reset the mcu, requiring your presence (or a special wire) - just one step from flipping a conveniently situated switch (or having 1 more wire). And no more uncertainty...
And my "long break" option is no worse, no opened box, but also no false bootloader start.
And all the time I am talking about options, the present state may still be the default.

the boot init is a hw function
how do you mean? The fact that the bootloader starts after a hard reset is a hw fact, but the bootloader itself (including the autobaud, "U" wait, said-400ms delay, SoftICE, IAP functions, password protection etc.) is nothing less, nothing more than sw, residing in the 8kB shadow flash at 0000. Hence, reprogrammable, modifiable (Philips itself published an upgrade on its site).
