A Modem is simply a way of creating a data link over an analogue phone line - it has nothing specifically to do with the internet! Modem manufacturers like Multitech, USR, 3-Com, et al have several decades of experience in this stuff - there really is no point in trying to roll your own from scratch! If you don't want to use a a commercial, ready-made, "boxed" modem, there are plenty of sources of embedded modules; eg, http://www.multitech.com/PRODUCTS/.../Embedded/ You can also buy modem chips - but then designing your own analogue line interface is non-trivial, and fraught with legal and/or regulatory pitfalls. |
