Yes, I suspect the video would be compressed, either in an mpeg format or in a proprietary one. And I'm not certain about the achievable speeds of "56k" modems. I know that my software reports about 44k once the connection is negotiated. And I know that it isn't really possible to achieve 56k, and that it's a limitation of the physics of the telephone lines/system, not the modem. Otherwise there'd be 1Meg modems by now. Instead, the telcos started offering ISDN and Digital Subscriber Lines. And with ISDN and DSL there are different speeds for transmition and reception. As for dial up modems, ff there's a difference between transmission and receiving speeds, it's news to me. I'll take your word for it. In any case, Paul doesn't need to invent any new hardware to send video, even over a direct dialed connection. |
