My Dad taught me about comms and bandwidth when I was about 12 years old, so grasping the underlying truths is . At University, we used "symbols, signals and noise", (Pierce ?) which is a great introduction to Shannon's theories. My other course book was written by my lecturer, but it was still highly readable.
