Some dies with even bits on one side, odd on the other.
Thread the paths from one side under the chip and between pins of the other side and you have a bus with all bits in order. (of course the paths need to be REALLY thin...)

But guys who designed the layout of the second pair of transceivers in MAX232 had really some odd sense of humor. One signal goes across, the other returns on the same side...
