I think you're living in the past. Yes, a lot of the earlier 74xxx parts (like say 74xx14 inverters) have inconvenient pinouts, probably more to do with gates on the die and such. I agree that some of these new 74xx5xxx series logic chips and some other newer devices do have convinient pinouts but still a lot of new devices have very inconvinient pinouts. A couple of examples 1. My favourite LPC932A1 doesnt have port pins of same port in continous manner. Port pins are scattered like hell. I dont think LPC932A1 is a device of past. 2. The most recent quadrature decoder by Agilent HCTL2032 has got one of the worst pinouts I have ever seen. I have got a lot of other devices which are very recent but have horrible pinouts.
