On 98/ME the OS assigns the COM port according to the order of enumeration (when the device is activated) and on 2000/XP the COM port is assigned according to the physical port. So we have seen devices on 98/ME that keep the same COM port number when moved to different ports (same number of devices attached) but on XP doing this changes the port number. I have witnessed this with two different classes of devices, but cannot guarantee that all devices behave that way. The nice thing about XP is that the COM port will be the same no matter what else is plugged into the system. On 98 the COM port might move if the system is booted with one device added or removed. I suspect this was done intentionally by Microsoft. GB |
