#98348 - benefits of readable protocol
Responding to: ???'s previous message

Who uses "any terminal program" to program ISP.

For example, Ian Bell does so (see under Software#1) - and also I do, ocassionally.

The benefit of human readable/writable protocol is that it can be used on any reasonable platform with UART. I know that there are many Mac's around in the US; is there a port of FM or FLIP or WSD(*) for MacOS?. Also, for example, our application connected to a board containing RD2 runs on PC under DOS (there ARE real reasons for it, don't open this question please). For ocassional upgrades - there are some suitable terminal programs around, but no FM nor FLIP for DOS.

Also, imagine, you are at the customer, no laptop with you (OK you already told me you have laptops in piles laying around, but try to imagine it is not the case) and suddenly you find out the customer has an old version of the firmware that needs upgrading. You can easily download the new firmware from your ftp-server, but the customer will not allow you to install a - for him unknown - software on his computer - but a terminal is right there as a part of the OS package...

Another example, I don't need to write a single line for my PDA to be able to make the upgrades from it.

The only drawback stemming from it is that the programming is somewhat slower, as more characters have to be transmitted per byte.
