Thats a nice idea stealing power from 2nd usb port and using Ijaz's circuit will give isolation.
There is a dead simple way to isolate then - unplug the laptop from the mains during programming :) USB unplugged from Mains not the micro board connected to machine sensors and other devices. There is still possibility of damage. When a laptop is running on batteries disconnected from mains isnt there risk of diffrence ground potentials of micro and laptop being too high.
