Yes, I have control of the motor, but it's not a stepper. It's basically a fancy DC motor (piezo based).

LVDT might be a possibility, but I agree...a rather expensive one.

Is something like ultrasonic a possibility at such a shortprecise distance?

Also, what about some sort of magnetic sensor that counts rotations?
