We have been looking at a Bourns encoder for our application, but I didn't even spot these.

Unfortuantly, our "travel" is probably more like 0-3". Looks like the largest distance they have is 0.5".

The encoder we are sampling from them is the 3315, which I think sells for a little under $2:
