The 6" version of these things now retail around $25 or cheaper. I partially dissected one once - it seems to use an etched copper/glassfibre graticule (like PCB material) in the stem of the instrument. The digital readout slides over this and resolves down to 0.0005" (0.02mm). It even has a serial output port (which I suspect must be at ~TTL levels). Amazing value. Could be perfect for you app.
