I am sure that some people will disagree with me, but I feel a good microcontroller programmer should start with an electrical engineering degree, and then learn to write code. I have worked with computer science type firmware engineers, and most lacked the perspective to be as effective as a EE. Granted, some of the algorithms involved require a CS background.
