Wouldn't the body also act as shielding and help to prevent noise entering the system from outside sources as well as absorbing from internal sources. (Didn't seem to help the alternator noise on my new car stereo though).

From a manufacturing standpoint I am sure it is cheaper to implement "chassis ground" as well.
