Kai,

In the instance where you have a passive sensor like a thermistor or potentiometer or even a powered sensor powered from the external source where do we put the cable shield? In the instance of an automotive application we can't connect the shield to the chassis or engine as this may cause an unwanted current path. So the cable shield is connected at only one end.

Whilst in most other applications we want to connect the shield to ground at both ends for EMC reasons as you mention.
