#115578 - Old tradition
Responding to: ???'s previous message
Russell said:
In the instance of an automotive application we can't connect the shield to the chassis or engine as this may cause an unwanted current path. So the cable shield is connected at only one end.

Yes, that's the old tradition. The new strategy is to connect as many as possible cables with their shields to ground at both ends and by this reducing the overall ground noise and minimizing the effective ground loop areas.

People from http://www.compliance-club.com are following this new strategy and find more and more friends of it. They say, that single side grounded shields become worthless with todays contamination by HF (cellphone, etc). This could be one reason why the modern car's electronics is so unreliable today.
