If your signal can drive the input to a RS232 or RS485 receiver, you can find such chips that can withstand almost anyrhing. E.g. I use the LT1785/LT1791 from linear technology http://www.linear.com/pc/produc...1017,P1713 can, in adiition to surges of +_15kV, withstand a constant + or - 60 volts on the A and B inputs.
