I've seen this stated many times, but averaging is only a help with certain kinds of cyclic noise, not drift effects. <p>

True, but drift effects might be irrelevant (for example, if the signal is filtered with a highpass filter later on), or can be eliminated (by frequent calibration or by comparing the actual signal to a fixed reference).
