Just seen TI advertising a Reference Design for a "24-bit" ADC.

They claim "up to 23.5 effective bits"

Notice the application notes listed on that page with titles like "Analog-to-Digital Converter Grounding Practices Affect System Performance", and "Principles of Data Acquisition and Conversion"

There's probably some worthwhile reading for you there.

You should also seek out similar materials at the likes of Analog Devices, National Semiconductor, et al...
