Indeed they were. The UK 405-line system vertical scan rate (and hence the line scan frequency) was synchronised to the National Grid mains frequency. This had to stop with the 625-line system when a colour sub-carrier that had to be accurately controlled was introduced. By that time, TV set designers had got better at eliminating mains picture modulation effects. (They'd mostly gone transistor, which helped...)
