The suggestion of using Philips LPC series is also good, but I am not sure of the source in India. Some one more knowledgeable about the sourcing may please help. The packaging is very attractive SO8 and TSSOP14, and the price is even more attractive, I think I got them for Rs.30/= (0.75US$) and Rs.45/= (~1.1US$), they are available with Elecktronika Sales (Chennai), but I would not touch these with a 10 feet pole, I could never make these work and since then I jumped into the Renesas bandwagon.
