As Erik says, RS-232 is not designed to supply power. Period.
There are, of course, many devices that do seem to manage to do it - but can they guarantee that they will always work with absolutely any RS-232 port? If you can take the risk on the uncertainty, go ahead - just Google for the very many "circuit ideas" that will describe this all over the web. But, as you specifically mention PCs, why not use USB? USB is specifically designed to supply power! Plus, we see an increasing number of posts here and elsewhere noting that PCs often don't have RS-232 ports these days! |
