Keep in mind that RS232 defines the 25-pin connector for RS232. If you don't use a 25-pin connector, with the pin assignments as shown, then you're on your own. The standard, BTW, defines three of the pins as references. Pin 7 is the GND reference, and two others (my breakout box is in another room) are tied to the V+ and V- supplies through a 1K resistor. That provides enough supply current for SOME interface circuits.
