I could be wrong, Of the top of my head...

-They are old NMOS Parts
Not all were 12Mhz There were 8Mhz ones.
The got Warm in normal use. That is how it was before CMOS and shrunk dies.
-How is the +5? It may draw too much.
-The Reset? It needs a cap and resistor, or a reset chip.
-They may not work with you TTL Logic family.
-is EA right?
