The burden caps should ALWAYS be the specified size,

I haven't refered to cap size but their layout. I most certainly agree with 'stick to the datasheet' part about burden caps size. But, if you have them too far from mC, or just pinned in some 'plug-in' dev board with their legs at full size, then you have it's legs and all connection to mC act as antennas, effectively making your oscilation a mess...

Happened to me when first time used 33pF ceramic condensators and 24MHz crtystal. Got cca 3.875 MHz oscillator... No need to tell that I've iterated my timer vaues in order to have anything received to hyperteminal, since I've (naturally) suspected serial/mC rather than my messy oscilator :)
