What you refer to is what happens if the "hardware handshake" is on. IIRC this is discussed in enough detail in Jon's document. That covers pretty much of the topic, with enough stress on troubleshooting, at least for the beginners - except perhaps the interrupt-driven Rx/Tx (or have you already changed on that, Jon?) - but that's not a beginner's issue anyway, is it...
