I agree, your method is not a big deal, nor is multiplexing, but for a small display, in this case, only ten characters, multiplexing is pretty easy.....
it is - till you start adding 'features' such as intensity regulation, scroll and whatever. For a banale display you may very well be right. However most banale displays suddenly get a requirement of ... and then a requirement of ... and suddenly you regret the decision to multiplex.

Another issue of multiplexing is that is is just about the best EMI generator I know of.

The one multiplexed display board I have in my 'arsenal' (the 'simple' one) is left by the wayside for some installations, simply because some features can not be implemented. Next generation will have no multiplexed displays.
