From what I've read, most users throw away their flexibility in order to use the internal UART with 11.0592 MHz crystals and then set up the first UART whether it's vital to their code or not.

One of these days, I'm goning to switch to an external UART, but I have to disassemble the code first. Because of the way the monitor is constructed, it will take some time to catch all the references to the async serial channel. Until then, one will have to suffer without the first UART in order to use.
