and he replied "I prefer to calculate this op-amp equation than having a component with timing diagrams". . The friend I mentioned above was quite good at hardware and beginner at software.

I hope analog, if he delt with digital HW with a attitude "no component with timing diagrams" I would hate to accidentially buy one of the products he 'designed'.

I once were "quite good at hardware and beginner at software" and, had I maintained an attitude of "hardware is the only route" I would not be where I am today.
