The alarm or actually a high output buzzer does not draw a lot of current because it was able to operate continously for quite a long time on a 3x1.5V cell batteries (externally powered). Also, even if the alarm does actually consume a lot of power and thus draining the battery very fast, in practical, the alarm will rarely or might not be triggered at all (unless the criminal activities are very high in your area ;))
