They didn't just want to see that you could make a part work, but that you could actually use it proficiently
Not a professor, but the director of a very advanced chemical institude wanted a 'proof of concept' of an Amino Acid Synthesizer before I made the machine for his lab (using super sterile non-reactive materials and VERY precise dosage units is expensive). The 'proof of concept' unit is now in his home as an automatic bartender, the final unit is in his lab :)
