#142147 - 10Mbps is probably more than enough
Responding to: ???'s previous message

If all the device has to do is serve some low volume web pages and send emails on demand, 10Mbps is more than enough. How will the data reach it's destination? Via internet? If so, the end user probably has only a 512kbps connection!

If it is a real cost sensitive app - then go with the PIC with on chip ethernet mac & phy. Personally PIC's are never my first choice, but if there is a solid argument for cost and # of chips involved, it just might win. There's also the Luminary Micro LM6965 but that's a 3V part - 5V tolerant i/o though and a slab of flash and ram to boot. EV board is only $70usd.

For multichip solution you have your choice of micro and an external mac/phy chip - Realtek RTL8019 chips are real cheap and only need a crystal , magjack and a handful of jellybean bits. Or use the microchip ENC device & magjack.

When you talk about costing - quote an quantity also. You also have to work in your development cost also - someone has to pay for that!
