Some years ago, before onboard flash memory became common, the program in many/most 8051 systems was stored in an external EPROM. I don't remember ever working on a project where the code was in external RAM. However, whether the external memory is EPROM or RAM does not make any difference to the things we have been talking about (decoding hex files, what goes into the memory, etc.). It only affects how you have to connect the RAM to the 8051 device. If you are questioning the accuracy of the information in my previous message, you can be pretty sure that others on the forum would have corrected me with great enthusiasm by now if something was wrong! :) That's one of the good things about this forum--bad information gets exposed as such pretty quickly.
