#152936 - You've got to use exactly the parts they recommend
Responding to: ???'s previous message

I got this chip a few days ago but the loader responds by announcing itself.. ad infinitum.

"DS89C430 LOADER DS89C430 LOADER DS89C430 LOADER DS89C430 LOADER DS89C430 LOADER ..."

My comms and reset circuit must be ok, I think. I tried it first using Dallas MTK software on Windows then a serial terminal GtkTerm on Linux with the same result.

Is the chip a dud? Is there anything I can do?

Any help or ideas gratefully received.

Have you wired your circuit EXACTLY as shown in the Dallas app-note? It's not a complex circuit, so it should be easy to check and correct. Be sure, too, that you've properly configured the serial port. (IIRC, the software handles that for you)

If you've changed ANYTHING ... anything at all, including the RESET circuit, you're on your own.

Are you using a crystal oscillator or have you attached a crystal to the MCU?

Read the datasheets and app-notes very carefully and follow them to the letter. Use exactly the components they recommend and not just whatever you have on hand. If it says 10K, use 10000.00 ohms, not 11000. If it says 4.7 uF, use that. Now, in reality, none of the components are that critical, but if it says 74HCxxx, don't try to get by with 74LSxxx ... HCT should work, however.

Be sure your reset capacitor is what they recommend. the MCU has an internal pull-down resistor, so that shouldn't be an issue. Make sure your power supply is well-regulated and has a risetime no longer than 10 ms. I think 1 ms is better and 10 us is better yet. Hopefully, you're using one of the crystals used in their table, though if you're getting a the message you say you are, your baud rate is probably correct.

Have you put a 'scope on this circuit yet? Is the power clean? How are the GND connections? How much power-gnd noise is there?

If all this stuff is all very well within specified limits, then it's on the Dallas guys to tell you what's wrong.
