#152938 - Mke sure you've got the right software
Responding to: ???'s previous message

I haven't got a scope to check but it's a meaty 4A regulated PSU which I've used for lots of other circuits with no problems.

I just tried it with an alternative PSU with the same result: it responds but repeats its identity.

I wondered whether the reset circuit was affected by something else but it has the banner including the copyright notice, just once, followed by the id string repeated forever. If it was resetting each time, it would repeat starting with the banner line and there would be some randomness in the repeats.

Is it a corrupted loader ROM? I sent for another one ('420 only available) to see if it's any different.

Thanks for the suggestion to talk to Dallas but would they be bothered about someone with one dud "new" 5 year old chip not got from them?

ISTR that there's a specific software package that Dallas provides for programming their parts. Be sure that you have the right version of that.

My own use of the DS894x0 series has, so far, been as fast 8032's, so I can't really comment regarding the bootloader and its PC-based "other end." However, having seen the hassles others have gone through with ATMEL and Philips ISP parts, I can imagine there are many pitfalls.

If you have a little patience, I'll wire a bootloader for the 89C4x0 series and give it a try, just for reference. That'll take an hour or so, and it's tax season, so I have to spend most of my spare time figuring out how and how much to pay Uncle Sam.

Did you wire up EXACTLY the circuit that they (Maxim/Dallas) recommend?
