For much less money and trouble, there's a range of ARM CPU's that have a 32-bit address bus and a 32-bit data bus, and run much faster than the 8086-types. Some of them have built-in SDRAM channels allowing you to put on 16 MB of SDRAM for about the cost of a 32Kx8 SRAM. They often have built-in Ethernet MAC's and other "handy" features.
