LM1086 is almost 2 USD !! I have been observing the output of LM317, and it has been stable at 3.2 to 3.3 volts. To reduce the cost, I thought of using 3 diodes and then switched to LM317 after checking the performance, even though I was worried about the drop-out band in the border region.
