LM1086 is almost 2 USD !! I have been observing the output of LM317, and it has been stable at 3.2 to 3.3 volts.
reducing cost by going outside the datasheet is not reducing cost, it is delaying cost till the requests for RMAs come in.

To reduce the cost, I thought of using 3 diodes and then switched to LM317 after checking the performance, even though I was worried about the drop-out band in the border region.
not a good approach either.
