Its cheaper because it has less functionality ?

Specifically its interrupt structure is crap, its a RISC architecture, which gave it some speed advantages over the original '52 Modern '52s can opearte 12 times faster, and that advantage disappears compared to the '52.

'52s have more on chip peripherals and more ports available for "stuff", and excellent instructions for handling them

PICs have poor support for external memory or memory mapped peripherals.

'52 variants are much much more commonplace - USB chips ('52 core) FPGA chips ('52 core) camera chips ('52 core) The list is almost endless
16 bit chips ? ('52 core set)
