#49737 - RE: Analogue Multiplexer for 0-10V Signa
Responding to: ???'s previous message
Charles:

I for one was not misled by the schematic that you posted. What I did say however was that I felt that the schematic did have the potential to be misleading. Specifically you stated in your words that....

The CD4067 (16 input multiplexer analog input IC) CMOS integrated circuit is capable of handling 0-10VDC input signal with the proper sit up. Below is a circuit which shows how to hook up one.

I am certain that many people who read these words will conclude that you have brought up this CD4067 chip as an alternative over the 4051 that the original poster was using because of its unique property to be able to handle 0 to 10V inputs. Your words lead directly into stating that "shows how to hook one up". Some who read this will conclude that the chip as shown connected can handle the 0 to 10V that you stated.

Now some persons, such as Kai, have come to support your attempt to help provide a solution for the problem that Sajid Hussain Ansari brought to this forum. They have said as well as your self that it is "obvious" that the posted circuit can only support signals up to near 5 volts or so. But I have to tell you that what may be obvious to you, me, Kai, or any other person familiar with CD40xx series analog multiplexors is not going to be obvious to everyone. Especially someone who has not used these types of chips before. It would not be at all unexpected for someone new to these chips to take your posting for what it shows at face value. Namely: they may expect that Charles has proposed a cool chip that runs off of +5V and yet can handle 0->10 volt inputs.

Now instead of trying to get all "professional" about this thing and stating things about how many facts you stand on, instead look at your post from the eyes of a newbie that needs help. I think that you will agree that there is a distinct possibility that they could be misled.

There is a price about posting a schematic or a piece of source code to this forum. In doing so the poster is offering a "solution" and in so doing that "solution" should offer what any good engineering solution would offer - clarity, exactness, and pertinency. The price exacted from the poster is to try to meet these goals. And it is always very important to not leave a dangling inference or a "it seems obvious". If one needs to say something it should be written into the post as text and explain the issue and provide the clarity, exactness, and pertinency that the figure may lack.

Communications......its all about effective communications.
