Maybe because it requires one heck of a lot of extra -precision- resistors?
weighing that aagainst the cost of an added 12V supply and a level shifter, could easily come out in favor of the resistors. Anyhow there is more thn one way to skin a cat, and - usually - more than one way to design a circuit.
