Compression and fast retrieval do not coincide.
There is a trade-off.
You could try looking for an LZ77 algorithm implementation. I believe though that this would be too much for your micro if you want to make an efficient system as a whole.
As Craig said first try to make your data more compact from the begining an only if case requires it go to a compression technique.
