This was an encoding scheme used by DEC back in the days of the PDPs - it packed 3 characters into 2 bytes, using a restricted 40-charcter set.
40 decimal is 50 in octal - hence the name. Just feed "Radix-50" into your favourite internet search engine for further details... These days, GSM has the option to pack 7-bit characters without wasting 1 bit per byte for SMS - I think the term is "PDU?" |
