There is no misunderstanding. On the contrary you worded it well. Normally I get put off by such statements on market forces. When the volumes are nothing to shout about, one naturally would do all that to save his own skin : Use components that are current; easy to handle (program); well documented; not unreliable and has most of what you want on a single die etc.

Most times YOU can choose the market that you want to serve.
