#78594 - RE: ! (Hating USB) Responding to: ???'s previous message |
Using such cables is convenient becasue of the ease of having 6 or 7 ports if needed, the cables are small and flexible, baud rates way higher than 115200 are feasible, and the host end applications software is no different than that written to talk to a built-in COM1 or COM2. I guess it would be convenient if you regularly need to connect to 6 or 7 serial devices simultaneously. In my experience when I need a serial port I need just one and usually need to communicate at 9600 or 19200 baud. But if you need 6 or 7 serial ports communicating simultaneously at 115200 then I can see where the USB approach would be useful. This doesn't change my view of USB though. As I said, USB has its place. I just resent the fact that they're offering USB as a replacement for RS232. If they want to offer USB and a single RS232 DB9 that's fine. But I find it annoying when they offer a couple USBs and not a single RS232. Regards, Craig Steiner |
