There are readymade USB modules available from some vendors such as FTDI but again these are not easily available in most of the places.


You need not to buy this complete USB module from FTDI. I would buy a kit from www.ELV.de, containing a FT8U232AM chip, a serial EEPROM, two optos 6N137 and a dll driver on floppy for 22.-Euro. This would allow me to build an USB<->RS232 converter, providing full galvanic isolation.
