#78646 - Cost of DB9
Responding to: ???'s previous message
Hmm, it seems that the average user isn't going to use RS232 anymore, so multiply those 50 cents by some million and you 'll see why they remove the DB9 connectors

The cost of the DB9 is quite irrelevant even if you sell a million machines. The cost of the DB9 should be factored into your production cost which increases the price to the consumer by 50 cents (or whatever the cost really is at one-million off). It doesn't come out of your profit which, if it did, would cost you $500,000 over a million units.

The only way the profit issue comes into it is if they're charging $500 for a full computer with DB9 and still charge $500 after they removed DB9. In which case I have a philosophical problem with the company because they're selling me less computer for the same amount of money.

And if we're going to start looking at ways to cut corners how many people use the firewall connection? Not too many compared to USB. How many laptop users use the monitor port on the back of the laptop? Sales people doing presentations, sure, but most laptop users use the laptop screen. Why don't we get rid of these seldom-used ports to save a few pennies?

As a user (and a developer) I'd rather pay an extra $5 for all the ports I could ever need than pay $5 less and find in the future something I wanted to do isn't available because the computer manufacturer either wanted to try to reduce my price by $5 or by padding their profits with costs they should have taken out of the price when they took off the ports.

If we follow this approach to the logical (or illogical) conclusion then computers will come built with only the features that 90% of the users want. They will come with only USB ports, will not come with any memory slots because most users buy new computers rather than upgrading their own, and we might as well put Microsoft Windows in a BIOS chip on the motherboard since 90% of the people use Windows. The heck with innovation.

I want a computer--not some PlayStation/XBox game-type game system that locks me into what the manufacturer thinks I should do with it.

Regards,
Craig Steiner
