I can understand your frustration. And your difficulty in explaining the item. Here is the image for the benefit of members who would like to know what is it :




I have had some success with TVS make connectors which come with a latch ( actually you need some effort to separate the assembly). And please note that these connectors have no endurance rating and hence too many insertions and removals ( say about 50 to 100 times) render them useless. And don't exceed 8 pin assemblies at any time - you do get 10 and 12 pin but they are hopeless. The image that I have posted is a general purpose experiment PCB and been in use the last 8 months - no issues till date with relimates. And these are not even the latched variety.

In fact nowadays you get much better ones - I atleast have not faced such unreliability as mentioned by you ( less than 10% OK) If possible switch over to FRC connectors - far more reliable. And if you need to handle power ( Vcc, Vee) then use the power locks.
