#81235 - Relimates- reliable tips
Responding to: ???'s previous message
Hi Prahlad,

- I am happy I was able to show the right image.

- As mailed to you already, just give me day's time, and I will revert with the local supplier's address. If I am able to talk to my engineer today, will do it today itself.

- Most members seem to be hinting at the manufacturing" process of these connectors. Let me clarify : The Power_locks or Molex connectors are the only ones that we assemble. I have skilled fellows who with a combination of nose pliers + soldering iron do a damn good job of it.( Warning: You will need proper tools for high volume manufacturing set up) On the other hand the relimate connectors are bought readymade with the female portion having flying leads of 250mm length. I do hope that you did not try crimping the relimate!! It is too small and you need the right tools.

- For most industrial applications I have done away with these relimates and use the Phoenix range of PCB mounted screw terminals. Yes they do occupy more of PCB real estate but are very reliable. And you also get the snap on variety. The wired female header can be just unplugged from the PCB mounted male header. So easy.

- For LCDs and Keypads we use FRC connectors only. The LCD module terminations are soldered with a single row bergsticks . We prepare a FRC cable assembly with one end as flying leads. This is soldered on to the bergsticks AND MOST IMPORTANT, the flat cable is MECHANICALLY secured to one edge of the LCD module. The FRC connector on the other end of the cable snaps on the PCB. Thats it.

- One last thing on Relimates. The male header that mounts on the PCB has a very small pin-to-plastic bonding area and if the soldering is not done fast,
there is every possiblity of melting the bonding and screwing up the alignment of the pins. In such an event the contacts will be VERY unreliable.

The best way to overcome this is :

A. Insert the female header into the male header prior to soldering the male on the PCB.
B. Solder fast and neat.
C. Wait for 10-15 seconds for the pin-plastic bonding to cool and set.
D. Remove the female header.
E. Enjoy the benefits of a good relimate!!
