#85054 - Large RAM bank
With a desire not to invoke the discssion of whether or not the 8052 is the best MCU to do this, I'm wondering if anyone has any thoughts on what the best approach to a large RAM store would be? I'm looking for something on the order of 512MB (or more) of RAM accessed by the 8052, probably in 8k banks.

A bunch of standard 28-pin RAMs would work but is obviously not practical since I'd need a large number of them for even the minimum amount of memory I'm interested--to speak nothing of how many I'd need if I ever wanted to go higher.

I've looked at SIMMs and DIMMs but it appears that they wouldn't be very easy to use in an 8052 architecture. It appears there is some kind of "refresh" cycle every 15us that would have to be worked in somehow? There is some information on pjrc.com and I suspect if I look at some of his source code it will make more sense but generally speaking it looks like SIMMs/DIMMs are less straight-forward than traditional SRAM ICs.

Any feedback would be appreciated. I'd prefer an approach that uses discrete logic ICs but I'm open to any suggestions that can reasonably be made to work with the 8052.

Regards,
Craig Steiner
